This Ramadan, Muslims in Rail supporters together raised a fantastic £7,854 in charity towards the Muslim Aid appeal for the Ansarul Islamic Secondary School in Sierra Leone, via our annual ‘Fast Money’ Charity challenge. Encouraging donors to give what they would otherwise spend on lunch towards charity.
The donations will go towards the school’s water well, a school bus, restoration and construction of an additional Engineering education facility, school fees and extra vocational lessons in mechanics and engineering, learning materials, toilets, furniture, uniforms, backpacks and books.
The appeal also aims to provide a engineering learning facility including a State School-Based Management awareness, monitoring, and evaluation.
Background:
In Sierra Leone, inadequate government funding leads to supply shortages, high pupil to teacher ratios, and the general low quality of the school systems. It is already hard enough for children to attend school to begin with. These inadequacies exacerbate the problems with education in Sierra Leone. Muslims in Rail has partnered with Muslim Aid to help raise awareness and funds for these underprivileged and deprived children.
Our support will provide increased access to education for 140 secondary school children. (80 girls and 60 boys). Gradually moving students from run down old schools to a new school.
The project will promote school awareness campaigns amongst parents, families and school going children. Similarly, it will provide books, school fees, lunch, learning materials, transportation, school uniforms, shoes and back packs to the selected children to motivate both parents and children to go to school. This will enable more girls who are more vulnerable to education due to cultural beliefs, to be encouraged to attend school and learn.
The school bus we aim to provide, will be used not only to transport the school children to and from school, but they also be used for field trips (excursions) to new places like embassies, the House of Parliament and big cities for specialist engineering programmes.
Further your donations will go towards contracting a carpenter to provide all the school furniture, including desks, chairs, benches and tables. That will be around 50 desks, 50 benches, 10 tables and 30 chairs.
